Have you ever wondered how Grethers glycerin pastilles are made? The making of Grether's Pastilles is a time consuming process which requires special knowledge, experience, and ingredients. In fact, some of the ingredients used in these pastilles are still ordered from the same suppliers who provided them at the time they were invented.
The main ingredient of Grether's Pastilles is glycerin, which is based on vegetable oils. The glycerine creates a wonderfully comfortable, moisturizing coating of the mucous membranes of the mouth and throat. This coating is invaluable to people who stress their throat with a great amount of speaking or singing, giving comforting relief, along with delicious flavor.
Agar Agar is the ingredient which gives these pastilles their smoothness, yet makes it impossible to mass produce. Agar Agar is a gelling agent which is produced from saltwater alge which is soaked for many hours before being combined with the remailing ingredients and cooked. After cooking, the fluid is left to settle and release it's air bubbles. While the liquid is settling, special wooden cases are filled with corn flour. Then the pastilles molds with the legendary GP symbol, are pressed into the corn flour filled wooden cases, then filled with the pastille mixture.
It takes approximately six weeks of the first maturing phase for the corn flour to soak up the surplus moisture of the pastilles. At the time the required firmness is reached, the pastilles are separated from the corn flour, sprayed with steam, and dried overnight. The pastilles are now ready for the second phase, which is a maturing process, which takes several weeks. The fruity pastilles are moved into air-conditioned rooms and coated with a tiny bit of beeswax and vegetable oil, which gives them their shine. The pastilles will develop their delicious fruity taste and aroma in these air-conditioned rooms over the next several weeks.
When the pastilles are ready, they undergo a strict quality control regimen under the supervision of the Swiss Agency for Therapeutic Products, Swissmedic. After passing quality control, they are packed and ready for sale.
The process in how Grethers glycerin pastilles are made is a time proving process. These pastilles have been popular for over 100 years and continue to do so.
